Biology & Ecology.
The species builds their carton nests using leaf and debris on branches of trees. This is a common arboreal species in Hong Kong, and can be found both in forests and on isolated trees. Workers are likely generalists, and like other species from the genus, may tend Hemiptera for their honeydew.
This species has been found associated with obligate myrmecophilous butterfly species (long-banded silverline), for which the caterpillars are only found living close-to or inside the ant nests of this species for food and protection.
Identification.
The species can be recognized by its relatively bigger size (4–6 mm), gaster with slightly darker coloration in contrast with the rest of the body, and by having sparse erect hairs on the head, antennal scapes and body.
