Distribution.
Native from the tropical and subtropical regions of East Asia, this is one of the most widespread species in the genus.
Biology & Ecology.
The species is known to nest within the soil. In Hong Kong, this is a very common species and can be found in forest nesting within the soil, under rocks or more rarely within trees using existing cavities.
Like other species from the same genus, there is a single mated worker (gamergate) in the colony. Comparing to other ant species with queen caste, gamergates are relatively short lived (around 200 days). When the colony loses its gamergate and becomes orphaned, the first newly-emerged worker will outcompete her siblings and become the next gamergate.
Identification.
The species can be recognized by its relatively large size (9.2–9.5 mm).
