Distribution.
Native from subtropical and temperate regions of East Asia, this species is the sister species of D. quadripunctatus from West Asia and Europe, both originated from a common ancestor in Pliocene (5.3–2.6 million years ago).
Biology & Ecology.
This species is native to Hong Kong, and can be found in forests and along forest edge. It is arboreal and has been found nesting in dead tree trunks and branches, and inside bamboo cavities. Little is known about the ecology of this species, such as its nest size.
Identification.
The species can be recognized by the absence of spine, dense sculpture on its head and mesosoma, and its color: black head, legs (partially) and gaster, deep red mandibles, mesosoma (partially) and petiole, and four ivory white spots on the gaster.
