Biology & Ecology.
This species is common in Hong Kong. The species nests within the soil and forage on the ground or in leaf litter, and can be found in open habitats.
Workers are general scavengers and hunters. Being a dominant species in its native range, experiments have shown that this species may be able to suppress invasion by imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) through competition and predation of fire ant’s newly mated queens (colony-founding queens), hence can serve as a mean of natural biological control of the invasive species. It was found that this species has a strong chemical defense, both in terms of chemical repellent and venom.
Identification.
The species can be recognized by its size (1.3–1.7 mm) and black coloration.
