Distribution.
One of the most widespread species in the genus. Native from the tropical and subtropical regions of East Asia, this species has been introduced worldwide as a pest ant.
Biology & Ecology.
Naturally it is an arboreal species that both nests and forages on trees, but it is also found in household and greenhouses. In Hong Kong, it can be found in forest, disturbed environment and household. Workers are slow-moving general scavengers, and diet includes honeydew produced by Hemiptera.
This species has ergatoids (wingless) queens only, hence new colonies are formed by budding, for which a fragment of a larger colony form a new, separate colony.
Identification.
The species can be recognized by its size (1.4–1.7 mm) and bicolor pattern: dark brown head and gaster, and yellow mandibles, antennae, mesosoma, waist segments and legs.
