Distribution.
One of the most widespread species in the genus. Native from central to southern Africa, this species has been introduced worldwide as a tramp species.
Biology & Ecology.
The species is known to nest within leaf litter. In Hong Kong, this species is an introduced species and, as in other introduced regions, is common in disturbed environment. This species is not known to have significantly impact native communities in introduced regions.
The species reproduces exclusively by thelytokous parthenogensis: there is no male, and queens are able to produce female offspring (both workers and queens) asexually.
Identification.
The species can be recognized by the lack of erect hair on its body, and its short and triangular mandibles with a transverse rim near the base.
