Distribution.
One of the most widespread species of ants. Likely native from the tropical and subtropical regions of East Asia, this species has been introduced worldwide.
Biology & Ecology.
This species is able to nest in small crevices inside households, and is one of the most frequent household pest ants around the globe. In Hong Kong, this species can be found in forest, open habitats and disturbed environment.
Workers are general scavengers and are attracted by all food sources, especially sugar. Workers are likely active the whole-day.
This species is occasionally an agricultural pest when it tends Hemiptera for their honeydew. This species has been found to reduce its aggressiveness and change its diet (from sugar-rich to protein-rich) when facing direct competition from the red imported fire ants.
Identification.
This species can be recognized by its small size (1.5–1.7 mm) and the absence of waist segment. ‘Ghost ant’ originally refer to this species only, though it is sometimes extended to its sister species T. indicum as well.
